Developing high reading skills as well as reading habits Characteristics of the English Programme: Strong reading comprehension skills are fundamental not only for the study of English but also for accessing all other subjects in the school curriculum. Kumon English aims to improve students reading comprehension skills and nurture an interest in reading, which will enable them to read widely and with confidence. The programme begins by enriching students vocabulary and teaching basic reading skills. Students go on to learn about sentence structure, paragraph building, summarisation and critical reading. Although Kumon is much more famous for their Math program, I decided to try out their English class for my daughter. I know that Kumon is not for everyone and requires a lot of discipline and independence. My girl went for the free trial and was assessed to start off from level 7A which focus more on reading and increasing in vocabulary. Gradually she will process to reading longer sentences and by level 2A she will be able to spell words on her own by using the phonetic sounds. There is no replacement classes, weekly homework for sure in terms of worksheets and there is no class teaching but sitting there and learning independently. I would advice attending the trial class to see if their method is suitable for your child first.
